Greetings all. We have received the 4th of July plans from the local Ruritans and have fortunately been able to arrange our schedules so that we can do a 3-peat this year for the 4th. Read last year's posts for direction from all locations to our house. The parade starts at 5:30pm and line-up begins at 4:30pm. Plan on being at our house by 3:30pm to decorate, etc. After the parade, we'll have supper and for auction lovers, the Ruritan is sponsoring a "donated goods auction" from local businesses; also, there will be "bluegrass musical entertaiment, magic show, dunking booth, pony rides and a antique car show." Lastly, after the auction the FIREWORKS ...... AT DUSK. All of the these activities are within a short walking distance from our house or are in our front yard. The plans for dinner at our house are the same. We'll provide a honey-baked spiral cut ham, paper products and condiments. We'll need rolls, soft drinks, side dishes, deserts, other meats (no grilling), and snacks. Last year we had about 30 folks including children (and 12 miatas-they get hungry too) so keep that in mind as you plan. Also, bring bags of candy - some folks ran out during the parade last year (the kids, young and old love the candy). Please make your posts and what you will be bringing to help everyone plan the menu. We will award prizes for best decorated car (decided on by vote by those present) and for who drove the longest distance to attend.

BIG TIME................IN A SMALL TOWN.

Martin & Sarah

O.K., July 4th is coming! Everyone look at the 2nd annual Star City Cruise in and show as a good lead-in to our Big Time in a Small Town event. See www.starcitymotormadness.com for further info. I need a couple of volunteers for Thursday nite 7/3 for a couple of hours to help with parking or registration.
If we have a few members register to show on Friday the 4th, we could convoy from downtown Roanoke to Shawsville!

My wife and I will be attending. I will bring rolls. My wife will be baking and bringing cookies if she can keep me out of them. By the way, all of her cookies come with my personal guarantee: If you don't like them, I will eat them for you.

Looking forward to the 4th!!

I will not be able to attend the July 4th galla. I am recovering from total knee replacement. You can only talk about if for so long and then you have to take the plunge. I had surgery on June 17th. I came home on June 21st. Very painful, and slow recovery. I get all worn out from just sitting. I am walking on a walker and looking forward to moving up to a cane. I don't know when I'll move up to shifting gears in a Miata. I am told that every thing went great with the surgery and that I am making progress but wow is it slow. I will continue to monitor the fourm to keep up with you guys. Spin a wheel for me!

Glad to hear you're on the mend, Hannah. You'll be zipping through the gears again in no time. We can undoubtedly find you a candy-dispensing seat ride if you make it up for the Forth!

We'll bring the smoked turkey. Barbara will probably come separately in the MSV, as I'll be in Roanoke during the morning at the Star City Motor Madness show.

Sarah and Martin,

I've been looking forward to the parade and fireworks, but I don't know if I can make it yet. We may have to go out of town on the 4th.

If I get to attend, my car is still out of commission (I haven't had any free time to look at it after I got it back to Roanoke), but I may be able to borrow Tammy's Miata.

I hope everyone has a lot of fun!

William Harr will be there. Anne has to work so I'll be alone.
I'll bring a 2 liter Coke, a 2 liter GingerAle, large bag of Barbeque Chips, and a pan of Brownies.

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE

We spoke with the parade organizaer today. He recommended we line up for the parade early if we want to be toward the front of the parade. Parade line-up begins at 4:30pm. The advantage of doing this is we would be away from the fire engines (which bring up the rear). Pretty jarring to listen to fire engine horns along the parade route in a open top sports car.

So to decorate cars, etc. plan to arrive around 3:30pm or so.

Set your odometers before leaving home so we can get mileage for the "car driving the farthest" award.

It looks like Lindsey (my daughter) and I will be able to make it, but we won't be able to stay for much more than the parade because she wants to see Common Bond at Victory Stadium in Roanoke. I'll bring a couple of 2L soft drinks, some of Tammy's homemade cookies, and some rolls.

By the way, Martin and Sarah, did you notice that Shawsville got a "mention" on the front page of the Extra section of the Roanoke Times on Thursday?

***************UPDATE**********************

It looks like we may have some thunder showers so we are going to try and fit everyone into our drive way rather than parking in the lawn this year. The ground is already soaked. See you all soon.

For those who were unable to attend, here is a list of who came:

  • Abingdon: William Harr
  • Lynchburg: Edward Von Saher
  • New River Valley: Martin Maples
  • New River Valley: Sarah Liddle
  • Roanoke: Larry Martin
  • Roanoke: Barbara Martin
  • Roanoke: Lindsey Shewbridge
  • Roanoke: Jonathan Shewbridge
  • Roanoke: Allen Spell
  • Roanoke: Sherri Spell
  • Winston-Salem: Mark Spell
  • Winston-Salem: Bernie Spell

Martin and Sarah, thanks for hosting this get-together at your house. As always, you made us feel welcome. In total, we had 7 cars, but Martin and Sarah decided not to drive in the parade this year.

The event started with car decoration at 3:30 PM. (Thankfully, the showers from earlier in the day had subsided.) While decorating the cars, we got to check out Martin and Sarah’s new Miata, a green ’97 M Edition. I think it was Edward who remarked that the wood kit in the interior was one of the nicer ones he’d seen, and I agree.

Around 4:30, Sarah gave awards for several things: best dressed car (Edward von Saher), youngest attendee (Lindsey Shewbridge), car driving farthest (Mark and Bernie Spell or William Harr, sorry, I don’t recall which…), etc. Thanks, Sarah, that was a nice touch for occasion.

Around 4:40, we drove to the parade line-up area, and the parade started at 5:30. The parade lasted for about 45 minutes, and, as usual, most of us ran out of candy before finishing the route. (There was a report that someone from our car “beaned” one of the spectators with a piece of candy , but I assure you that was accidental.) When the parade ended, everyone returned to Martin and Sarah’s house for more socializing and a “pot luck” supper.

Lindsey and I needed to leave early to attend the Victory Stadium celebration in Roanoke. (We ran into rain in Salem, but it dried off once we got into downtown Roanoke.) Before Lindsey and I left, we heard rumors that Shawsville was planning to go “all out” this year because of some sort of shipping mixup with the fireworks. How did the remaining celebration in Shawsville go?

Jonathan

The "Big Event in a Small Town" was a FUN BRMC event again, as usual. Kudos to Sarah and Martin for all their efforts; everyone really appreciated it. A special thanks to them. Thanks also to:
Lindsey, for being our "Parade Queen"
William, for bringing Ann's brownies all the way from Abington, even though she was working a holiday shift(Thanks, Ann).
Mark & Bernie, for coming all the way from Winston-Salem, and Allen & Sherrie for
hosting them and bringing "Uncle Sam"
Edward, for again setting the standard for patriotic decoration!

Thanks so much for the neat card. It really cheered me up. I am making progress daily but it seems slow. My new knee is three weeks old today. I am walking without a cane but still am not driving. No one told me how painful this surgery would be. I hope I will be driving soon but I won't be shifting gears in the Miata. I hope it won't be long before I'm zooming again. Thanks again for making my day with the card!
